Frank Lampard addressed the players’ deficiencies after Chelsea FC’s 0-1 loss to Wolves, as he suffered his first setback as the team’s temporary manager.
As usual, Chelsea missed out on opportunities and paid the price as Matheus Nunes’ miraculous goal was enough to secure three points for the home side. And the forBlues midfielder discovered first-hand just how much the players must improve on the pitch.
While this was his first game back in charge, the 44-year-old manager was able to see where they needed to improve before their Champions League quarterfinal match against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. The Blues had 13 shots over the course of the 90 minutes and generated several opportunities, but they lacked incisiveness in front of the goal and lacked communication with each other during the attacks.
The win for Wolves moves them to 12th place, while Chelsea still remains in 11th place and chances of finishing in the top-four are certainly in the mud. Unless we improve soon, there is every reason to believe it will only get much worse.
And Lampard acknowledged the need for significant improvement on the field and spoke out about it following the game (h/t Football.London).
“I think it was a performance; if I really analyse it and you want to win a Premier League game, I think you have to have more aggression in your game.” More speed, more competitive duels that go your way rather than the opposition.”
The team has creators, but they also require a goalscorer who can tick all the boxes and score goals against any opponent. Kai Havertz is unquestionably not the player we need at number nine. At the moment, the players lack personality and connection with one another during the games.
The club also needs to inculcate in the players the need to be aggressive and fight. Lampard was privy to such a mentality during his time as a player and will now need to educate those as to what it means to don the Blue jersey.
But, as it was Lampard’s first game in the role of interim manager, he may have noticed areas that could use refinement. And now Chelsea will play Real Madrid the next week, and the players will need to display courage and tenacity if they are to win both legs of the match.
