“Wednesday will be different” – Lampard remains defiant despite Wolves loss

Frank Lampard keen for Chelsea to turn their fortunes around following Wolves loss

Following the 1-0 loss against Wolves, Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard experienced his first setback as manager of the Blues in his second coming. Matheus Nunes’ stunning first-half goal proved for Wolves to grab three points on the Blues’ legend’s comeback.

The 44-year-old, who replaced Graham Potter for the rest of the season, failed to motivate the Blues in his first match in command since being fired in January 2021.

They are still in 11th place in the Premier League, but Lampard batted off concerns that Chelsea may suffer in Spain following a lacklustre loss at Molineux before Wednesday’s first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal at the Bernabeu.

The second half saw a slight improvement from Chelsea. Their season may be summarised by the fact that Lampard called on talent valued at £207.5 million from the bench, yet they never had an impact. After their victory, Wolves moved up to 12th in the Premier League, only one spot below Chelsea.

The former Chelsea midfielder, nevertheless, (h/t Belfast Telegraph) has defended his team and stated that their matchup with Real Madrid would be unique. He said:

“If you are worried, don’t come. The players shouldn’t be. I’m not saying the squad doesn’t have that aggression; it’s just bringing it together. Wednesday will be a completely different game.

The squad gave a dismal effort; we lacked everything during the game and were unable to complete even the most basic tasks on the field. Havertz appeared to be a shell of his former self and never had a real direction during the game.

And now we head into a big game, and Lampard should use a different strategy because the 4-3-3 backline has never looked comfortable for the team. The 3-4-3 formation has worked well for Chelsea’s style of play because Reece James and Ben Chilwell are more offensive fullbacks.

This was a very disappointing loss, and we now face Real Madrid, who are at the top of their game in the Champions League.
