Chelsea record signing keen to be a leader at Stamford Bridge

Enzo Fernandez wants to be a leader and serve as an example at Chelsea

In response to Frank Lampard’s comment on leadership, Enzo Fernandez said he had always aspired to be a leader and wants to set an example at Chelsea.

Despite Chelsea losing 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinal, Fernandez put up a strong display. The midfielder controlled the game with precise ball distribution and also covered half of the ground, being available for the ball and creating room for teammates.

When the 22-year-old had the ball, he would stretch the game and open up space with his long deliveries; however, he also occasionally lost possession. The other players around him lacked similar drive and Fernandez largely stood out amidst the men in Blue.

The 22-year-old played a significant role, completing a greater number of passes than any other player on the field (79/93), throwing precise long balls (13/16), and recovering more balls (10). More than any other Chelsea player, he also made more opportunities (2) and triumphed in more duels (7).

Chelsea had less control over the middle of the pitch because Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante did not provide Fernandez with enough help. (h/t Mirror), Fernandez responded to Lampard’s remarks in the pre-game interview.

“I always dreamed to be a leader because, when I started, I always wanted to be an example. To be defined like that so young makes me really proud. I always give my best and try to be an example for everyone.”

Since making his debut, Fernandez has participated in every game, demonstrating a growing importance to the team. To declare him the club’s leader, however, would be premature because he first needs to command the respect of the other players.

But he unquestionably possesses the traits of a leader, and this will ultimately show in the way he plays, which is bound to have an influence on those players who are underperforming and look to him for inspiration.
