Eidur Gudjohnsen believes Chelsea must perform at their highest level to stage a comeback against Real Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea will play host to Madrid with a 2-0 deficit and will need to pull off an upset to advance to the tournament’s semi-final. But if they don’t succeed in doing so, their season will undoubtedly be finished because they are already far behind in the race to finish in the Premier League top four.
The team might add another victory to their long list of comebacks at Stamford Bridge. However, against a team like Real Madrid, which always finds a way to win in tournaments like the Champions League, it’s always difficult to mount a comeback.
The former striker, (h/t Mirror), though, has advised Frank Lampard on how to pull off a comeback against a Spanish team. He said:
“If Chelsea can turn the tie around, then it would have to be up there with their greatest results. This is Real Madrid they are up against, the reigning European champions, and a club trying to win the trophy for the 15th time. So to turn things around after losing the first leg 2-0 is a huge task for them.”
“Chelsea must not allow herself to become desperate. They have to stay in the game for as long as possible, and that means not conceding an early goal. If they can keep Madrid out in the first 45 minutes, then they have a chance of turning it around.”
Despite the fact that Chelse have made several comebacks throughout history, we are up against a club that seldom ever permits clubs from performing miracles. It doesn’t get tougher than facing Real Madrid in Europe and we cannot afford to make any errors on the night.
Real Madrid, who are the most dangerous team during counter-attacks, can punish you for even the smallest error, so players will need to be on their toes. Players will need to stay in the game until the final whistle, even if we manage to score three or four goals.
In the second leg of our match against Real Madrid from last season, we were 4-3 up on aggregate and thought the tie was over, but the Spanish team came back and scored two goals and won the game. In addition to this, we must fully neutralise their midfield and stop Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema from linking up, and we have players who can do this difficult assignment.
Hopefully, Lampard will show some comeback videos to the squad to give them the courage to rally against Real Madrid.
