Chelsea could part ways with two senior stars next summer to raise transfer funds

Chelsea to permit Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount to leave in the summer window

Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount will be permitted to depart Chelsea during the summer transfer window as the Blues attempt to raise money through their departures.

Football Insider (h/t ESPN), reports that it is anticipated that Chelsea could recoup as much as £100 million for both players, whose contracts expire in 2024. It will represent a solid amount that can then be re-invested in the team.

Chelsea will try to let a few players depart after splurging in the last two transfer windows. The decision is being taken in order to balance salaries and follow financial regulations.

As Mount and Chelsea have not yet reached an agreement on his contract renewal, the midfielder may depart the club during the summer transfer window. Manchester United and Liverpool are still possible destinations for the English international.

Mount hasn’t played for Chelsea since their 2-0 loss to Tottenham and Hotspur, although he was spotted training out at Cobham before the match against Aston Villa. It remains to be seen if he will make his return this weekend.

Nonetheless, Kovacic has played in every game since Chelsea’s 0-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 after missing a few weeks due to injury. He may or may not be a part of Todd Boehly’s vision, and the same is true for Mount; neither player’s future with the team is assured.

If Mount and Kovacic are allowed to depart during the summer transfer window, £100 million sounds like a respectable sum for our troubles. Mount came through the youth system while we purchased the Croatian international from Real Madrid in 2019 for £40 million.

We can attempt to reach a deal with Mount, who is still crucial to the team, but if he wants to leave then we cannot force him to stay and sell him in the summer, given by 2024 he will become a free agent.

Meanwhile, Kovacic’s situation may be more complicated given that we have enough centre midfielders, including Carney Chukwuemeka and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez, even if Loftus-Cheek and Gallagher’s futures at the club are also in doubt.

More Chelsea News:

From the next season, Chukwuemeka will begin seeing game action. Whether the youngster will be handed the keys to the senior side following the summer exodus remains to be seen. Either way, it will appear to be a summer of change at the Stamford Bridge outfit.
