Chelsea and Manchester United could lock horns to sign 23-goal North American star

Chelsea could lock horns with Manchester United to sign Jonathan David this summer

According to L’Equipe (h/t Football.London), Chelsea could lock horns with rivals Manchester United for the signature of Lille striker Jonathan David this coming summer window.

The report reveals that Tottenham Hotspur could also be in the race as there is a strong possibility that Harry Kane could leave the club once his contract expires next summer.

We all know United are in need of a striker before the start of next season. Erik ten Hag has specifically mentioned getting a number nine. The Dutchman had earmarked Kane as his primary target. It seems like they are in the race for David as well.

Chelsea, on the other hand, should be focusing on getting a striker as well after struggling to put the ball in the back of the net this season.

They have signed a lot of wingers and attacking midfielders in the last two windows but failed to get a proper elite marksman. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was signed on the deadline day of the summer window, but the 33-year-old has failed to have any impact on the team.

The Blues have already agreed a deal to get Christopher Nkunku in the summer. Romelu Lukaku will be back from his loan spell at Inter Milan. Although the Belgian is keen on staying in Italy, could the potential appointment of Mauricio Pochettino change his mind? We will wait and see about that.

Coming back to David, he is a Canadian international who has had another fantastic season for Lille. The 23-year-old has scored 23 goals and assisted four in 34 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side.

Since signing for them from Gent in the summer of 2020, the striker has scored 55 goals in 130 appearances. Producing top-class numbers consistently at this age is an exceptional achievement.

At this moment, any world-class striker could do well at Chelsea. It depends on the profile of the player the new manager wants. To be fair to him, David does cover a lot of bases in that department.
