According to the Express, Chelsea icon John Terry has joined Dean Smith in an effort to keep Leicester City afloat in the English Premier League.
Terry was rumoured to be joining Frank Lampard following Lampard’s appointment as temporary manager of Chelsea till the end of the season. The 42-year-old already worked with Smith at Aston Villa in 2021 before unsuccessfully attempting to become a manager on his own.
As an assistant coach to Smith, he will collaborate with Craig Shakespeare, the former Foxes manager who took over Claudio Ranieri’s position at the club in 2019. Lampard seems to have chosen against including Terry in his own backroom staff at Chelsea after all.
Meanwhile, Lampard named Ashley Cole, Joe Edwards, and Chris Jones as his interim assistant coaches. This has prompted Blues supporters to consider including Terry on the coaching staff as well.
But earlier this month, Terry, who was previously working as a part-time manager with Chelsea’s youth sides, announced his retirement from managing. Whether he has given up hopes of ever making it big on the sidelines remains to be seen.
Saving Leicester from what is looking like an inevitable fight against the drop could see his fortunes soar. Whether that will be enough to attract interest from elsewhere remains to be seen.
With Terry joining Deam Smith’s coaching staff at Leicester, Smith can provide Terry with additional experience because he hasn’t yet managed a club, and managing a youth squad is very different.
Before becoming the manager of Chelsea in 2019, Lampard began his career as a manager with the Championship team Derby County, which indicates he has enough experience. The centre-back has been a great leader at Chelsea for the duration of his playing career, but doing so while not on the field is a different challenge.
We do, however, hope that Terry will gain enough experience during his time at Leicester to begin his first managerial role. Whether it be Chelsea or elsewhere, it is always good to see a legend make a name for himself.
