Chelsea have been in touch with the agents for Andre Onana, Gregor Kobel, and David Raya in an effort to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy.
As reported by the Evening Standard, (h/t Metro) Chelsea has been in communication with the representatives of Brentford’s David Raya, Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, and Inter Milan’s Andre Onana as they search for a new No.
The Blues are trying to get a new keeper since they believe Kepa has continued to play inconsistently and Mendy has not yet extended his deal, which runs out in 2025.
Chelsea paid Athletic Bilbao £72 million for the Spanish goalkeeper, making him one of the most expensive goalkeepers in Europe. However, the 28-year-old made many mistakes throughout the games, which allowed Mendy to overtake him and take the top spot.
Under Thomas Tuchel, Mendy was a regular player, but after suffering an injury, he has only participated in nine games, which saw the Spanish goalkeeper retain his spot as the number one Blues’ goalie.
Chelsea have informed the rival clubs that both goalkeepers are open for sale this summer since they are hesitant to extend their contracts. And Kepa continues to struggle between the goalposts and has been frequently criticised for his goalkeeping skills.
Given that the Blues frequently give up easy goals, buying a keeper has remained one of Chelsea’s top priorities. While Kepa has been unreliable and has a tendency to concede goals, Mendy has recently resumed training, and it is unclear when he will participate in his first game after suffering an injury. However, the status of his contract is also uncertain, and it doesn’t appear that he intends to prolong it.
Raya and Onana look like the perfect additions given that Chelsea are in communication with the aforementioned keepers. Both of them have earned names for themselves; Raya has made the most saves per 90 minutes this season so far.
While Onana has aided Inter Milan in reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions League, they are on the verge of reaching the semifinals after winning the first leg 2-0 against Benfica. In nine Champions League games, Onana has also maintained six clean sheets.
Either one of the three would seem like a possible upgrade on our current options on paper. Only time will tell who we get – it won’t be crazy to suggest that our potential new manager will have a big say in this, as now, the type of goalkeeper is also important for a manager’s system.
