Ashley Cole will join Frank Lampard for his interim spell at Chelsea
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea legend Ashley Cole will reunite with Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge as the latter returns in an interim role until the end of the 2022/23 season.
Graham Potter was fired by Chelsea earlier this month, and Lampard was named as an interim manager until the end of the current campaign. The former midfielder will hope that he can do better than his first underwhelming spell in charge of the Blues.
According to rumours, the club wants more time to identify Chelsea’s ideal long-term manager with Lampard largely acting as a stop-gap measure. Hopefully, Cole will help Lampard and the club rediscover their past glories.
Cole, who is part of Chelsea’s youth movement, will now work alongside Lampard when the midfielder’s second stint begins on Saturday afternoon against Wolves. Then Chelsea play Real Madrid on April 12 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal.
However, negotiations for a permanent manager are still ongoing, and Chelsea have contacted a number of managers, including Jose Mourinho. Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann are both interested in taking over as the next managers of the Blues for the upcoming season.
The responsibility of leading the hunt for the perfect manager has been taken on by co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.
Cole, who joined Chelsea in 2006, quickly made a name for himself as one of the team’s top left-backs. Together with John Terry and other defenders, Cole’s defensive skills helped the Blues build a strong defence. He contributed 37 assists to the Blues in 337 games.
Also, his work with Lampard may enable the team to benefit from some guidance from the former left-back. Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella would benefit greatly from learning where they can strengthen.
