The future of Mateo Kovacic at Chelsea looks uncertain with no contract talks
The future of Mateo Kovacic remains uncertain at Chelsea as there have been no talks behind the scenes regarding the extension of his contract.
Kovacic, who has his contract at Stamford Bridge expiring in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt), was linked with a move to Manchester City a few weeks ago.
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has set a precedence that the talks of new contracts with players should begin when they enter the final two years of their current deal. Keeping that in mind and knowing that no talks have taken place despite the Croatian’s contract expiry in 2024, it does seem like his future is uncertain.
The Blues are looking at different options to bolster their midfield department in the summer. Alexis Mac Allister is linked, while the club will do their bit to fight for Jude Bellingham and the Declan Rice saga could have a final call this time around as well.
Kovacic has been a fantastic servant for Chelsea over the past few years. While he is very good at what he does, the former Real Madrid midfielder does struggle to add goals to his game, which is key for a box-to-box midfielder. Even 8-10 goals per season are good. The 28-year-old has scored only six goals in his Chelsea career of 211 games so far.
With his contract expiring next year, the club should focus on selling him this summer, rather than letting him go for free during the 2023/24 campaign. That is if they are determined to not extend his stay here.

If this is to be Kovacic’s last season at Stamford Bridge, he would be remembered as a great player for the club. He always gave his all for the team and possesses a quality not many can match in terms of energy and passing accuracy in midfield. We would wish him all the best for the future!
