Speaking in the post-match press conference as quoted by Football. London, Chelsea boss Graham Potter has spoken about the return of Ben Chilwell to his best physical level.
The left-back had been struggling with his fitness earlier in the season but has been putting in the hard work to get back to his best form. He finally seems to be rediscovering his best levels.
Chilwell’s return to form is a significant boost for Chelsea, who have been struggling to put together a string of wins since the start of the year. The former Leicester City man can help the club change that.
The defender has been one of the highly-rated left-backs in the Premier League since his time at Leicester City and his absence was felt during his period of injury, especially with Marc Cucurella failing to convince.
Potter has been pleased with Chilwell’s progress and has highlighted the hard work that has gone into getting him back to his best. The manager noted that ideally, players would have several weeks of pre-season training to build up their fitness levels.
Despite this setback, Chilwell has managed to gradually improve his physical condition over the course of the season, with his performances improving as a result. Speaking about it, here is what Potter said
“That’s sort of what I’ve been talking about for a while. When you’re not winning, it doesn’t matter, but the likes of Ben, Wesley [Fofana], Ruben [Loftus-Cheek], Reece [James], and Raheem are all getting minutes in the Premier League. In an ideal world, you’d build that up in pre-season and have five or six weeks of build-up on the pitch”
“We’ve not been able to do that so they have had to do it in the Premier League. Ben has got stronger and stronger as the weeks have gone on and today I thought he affected the game in a really good way and contributed a lot to our first-half performance.”
For Chelsea fans, this news will come as a great relief. The left-back has shown that he has the ability to affect games at both ends of the pitch, with his attacking prowess and defensive solidity making him a valuable asset to the team.
The Blues got a much-needed 1-0 win against Leeds United. It was not the best performance that the Blues have put out but they have three points that are more valuable than gold to them right now.
Chelsea fans will hope that Chilwell’s injury troubles are behind him and that he can grow from strength to strength from here on. Let’s see how it goes.
