A View From The Bridge

Romano: Still “big gap” between Chelsea and 24-year-old in contract negotiation

Romano: There is a still big gap in contract negotiations between Chelsea and Mason Mount

According to a tweet from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, there is still a massive gap in contract negotiations between Chelsea and Mason Mount.

Mount, whose current contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt), has already rejected new offers from Chelsea in the recent past.

The 24-year-old is currently one of the lowest-paid players in the squad. He wants the wages of his new contract to be at par with what his fellow English teammates are earning. Reece James signed a new contract worth £250,000-per-week in September.

It has been mentioned quite a few times now that if there is no agreement by the summer, Chelsea would consider selling the player. It is a sensible thought because there will be no point in letting him go for free in 2024.

Liverpool are among the prominent names linked. A few days ago, it was reported that the Reds are highly likely to sign Mount in the summer. But, the Guardian has reported that Manchester United have joined the race, with the price tag revealed to be around £50m.

Daily Mail understands that Newcastle United are also in the reckoning to sign the player. Tony Cascarino wants the midfielder to snub Liverpool in favour of the Magpies. This suggestion is as ambiguous as the current handball rules in the game!

Mount has been at Chelsea since the age of six. After two profitable loan spells at Vitesse and Derby County, he became one of the best players in the team in the last three seasons.

Granted that things haven’t gone well for him this time around, but that does not take away the good things he has done in the previous 36 months. Moreover, he is a homegrown player – one that Chelsea fans have become proud to call ‘one of our own’.

More Chelsea News:

Being the club’s academy product, he loves being here and doing well. We have seen Chelsea spend a bucketload of money signing new players under Todd Boehly and before him, Roman Abramovich. It is time they loosen their pockets to keep one of the important assets.
