Newcastle United eyeing up a summer move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher
According to The Athletic (h/t Football.London), Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe likes Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher ahead of a potential move in the summer window.
Gallagher had an excellent spell on loan at Crystal Palace last season, where he scored eight goals and assisted three in 34 league games. Things have not been the same for him upon his return to Chelsea this time around.
The England international was one of the three players wanted by Newcastle in the January window as well, but nothing materialised. On the deadline day of the winter window, Palace wanted him back on loan, but that did not work out.
Gallagher has played just over 1,200 minutes in all competitions for Chelsea so far, with 19 of his 31 appearances coming from the bench.
After signing eight new players in the January window, Chelsea have got a bloated squad with good players not getting enough game time. We saw the difficulty with which Graham Potter named his Champions League squad for the knock-out stages. He didn’t have the room to include Benoit Badiashile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
A few days ago, Daily Mail reported that up to eleven players could be offloaded by the club in the summer to get some money back and trim the squad. Gallagher was named as one of the possible outgoers.
The 23-year-old is a good player, but things have not worked out for him here. If Newcastle make the move in the summer, it won’t be a bad idea to sell him and use the money to strengthen the squad in other positions, or as the manager wants.
