Chelsea midfielder ready to swap Stamford Bridge for Serie A next summer

Mateo Kovacic open to AC Milan summer transfer with Chelsea exit on the cards

Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic is open to joining AC Milan in the upcoming transfer window, having decided to leave the Blues next summer, according to Pianeta Milan (h/t The Sun).

The 28-year-old’s current contract with the Stamford Bridge side is set to expire in the summer of 2024. But the Croatia international plans to leave the West London club at the end of the season.

To that end, the midfielder has told the San Siro side that he is willing to make a move. The Serie A giants’ chiefs were in London and met with the former Real Madrid star’s camp to discuss a potential transfer.

Kovacic has been linked with a switch to Premier League rivals Manchester City as well. The Croatian made his way to Chelsea in the summer of 2018 from Los Blancos.

Over the years, the 28-year-old has been a regular first-team player for the Blues. He has been one of our most reliable players in the middle of the park and possesses immense talent.

In the current campaign, Kovacic has made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Stamford Bridge side, scoring two goals and providing an assist. The 28-year-old also shone for Croatia in the 2022 World Cup as they finished third in the prestigious competition.

Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez in January to bolster the engine room. Apart from the Argentina international, Graham Potter also has the likes of N’Golo Kante, Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, amongst others, at his disposal.

In the previous transfer window, we let go of Jorginho, who signed for Arsenal. Therefore, we evidently lack quality in depth in the midfield. Thus, it would be wise to keep a hold of Kovacic.

The Croatian has previously played for Inter Milan. As a result, it will be interesting to see if he will join their arch-city rivals AC Milan in the coming months.
