Manchester United have rekindled their interest in acquiring Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic for the next campaign. Pulisic still has one year left on his contract (Transfermarkt), so the Blues can still earn something from his departure.
And as per the Daily Express (h/t Football.London), the Blues will be hoping to earn a profit from the 24-year-old’s move, which could be close to £37 million.
The 24-year-old was rumoured to be moving to United during the previous summer transfer window when Raheem Sterling arrived, but the deal never transpired.
Moreover, the USMNT now has competition for game-time with Chelsea’s additional winter transfer window signings of Joao Felix, Noni Madueke, and Mykhailo Mudryk.
The attacker just made his recovery after being injured, and he is still linked with a move to a number of teams. It is thought, however, that United have reignited its interest in signing the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder.
Pulisic has played in just 18 Premier League games this year, and with Todd Boehly continuing to restructure the team for next season, the 24-year-old may be a major departure from the club.
If Pulisic joins United, he can play as a striker or on the right side. This is because Anthony Martial has a history of injuries since joining Manchester United, and Wout Weghorst won’t stay when his loan period is through.
The only dependable attackers are Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony, with Rashford serving as the primary goal scorer. And Erik Ten Hag, who has assisted Rashford in regaining his form, might help improve the USMNT player’s form as well.
So, moving to Manchester United could be the boost his career needs right now. For Chelsea, this could be the time when they make a final call on the player – whether they realise that the €64million fee they paid Borussia Dortmund back in 2019 was a mistake, or they continue to trust him in the hopes that he will realise his potential in SW6.
From what it looks like, it’s best to do the former. We signed young wingers in January, which is evidence in itself that the club is thinking beyond Pulisic. Perhaps his race is run in west London and its best we offload him when we can get something for him rather than lose him on a free transfer next year.
