A View From The Bridge

Two Premier League teams including Liverpool chasing £50m Chelsea star

Manchester United join Liverpool in the race to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount

According to the Guardian, Manchester United have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount, who is yet to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

Mount’s contract at Chelsea expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). He is currently one of the lowest-paid players at the club. He wants the new contract to reflect his status.

The club has offered him a new deal a couple of times, but the 24-year-old has rejected it. A few days ago, it was reported that Chelsea held up the negotiations till the end of this season to avoid any distractions. If they don’t find an agreement in the summer, they will consider selling him.

Liverpool have been linked with Mount for some time now, with recent reports suggesting that it is highly likely that the Reds would sign him. Newcastle United joined the race in the last couple of days. Manchester United become the latest club wanting to get the England international. He is valued at around £50m at the moment.

The former Derby County and Vitesse loanee has had an underwhelming season so far, but that does not take away the fact that he is an excellent player. He was one of Chelsea’s best players in the last two campaigns.

His quality on the ball, married with great work rate and versatility is something unique to a player. He can help the team with goals and assists as well.

Chelsea should do all it can to keep hold of him. At 24, he is entering the peak years of his career. We must make sure he spent those years at Stamford Bridge, rather than at Old Trafford or Anfield. The club has spent a lot of money on new players. It is time they fork out some cash to keep hold of one of their key assets.

And, obviously, losing him to a direct Premier League rival would be an added problem. The Reds need to refresh their midfield and it would be a shame if we were to help them in that.
