A View From The Bridge

“I made this type of choice”- Italy international gives verdict on his future amid Chelsea links

Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto breaks on his future amidst Chelsea links

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto is happy to be in the Premier League and wants to further improve his game amidst links with Chelsea in the recent past.

A few days ago, it was reported in Football.London that the Italian international is being tracked by Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City ahead of a potential move in the summer window.

The 19-year-old made a move from Zurich to Leeds last summer and has been one of their best players this season. He has scored four goals and assisted in 20 games in all competitions so far.

Here’s what Gnonto said when asked about his move to the Premier League and his future at Leeds (Tuttomercatoweb, h/t Football.London):

“I made this type of choice [moving to England]. I’m happy and I’ve shown that I’m a good player and I think I’ll do even better.”

The former Zurich youngster is a versatile forward who can operate in multiple positions in that department. He is a right-footed winger by definition who likes to take people on, create chances, make good decisions in the final third and has the pace to go past anyone in the league.

It is slightly weird to think that Chelsea are in a race for a right-footed winger when they literally forked £88.5m out to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk in January. They also have Raheem Sterling who likes to operate similarly.

As good a young as Gnonto is, the Blues should look at getting a striker and a new goalkeeper in the summer. Those are two key positions where they are lacking a genuine elite player.

But, given how we have operated in transfer markets under Todd Boehly, it would not be a surprise to see an unaddressed situation remain that way and an unnecessary signing made for the viewership. Let’s hope that is not the case this summer though.
