“On a knife edge”- Carragher bullish about Graham Potter keeping Chelsea job despite upturn in fortunes

Jamie Carragher recommends Chelsea fire Graham Potter at the end of the season

Jamie Carragher feels Graham Potter should be fired by Chelsea before the new season begins despite winning the club’s last two games across all competitions.

Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge, the Blues overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 and advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, 2-1 on aggregate.

Carragher believes that the former Brighton manager’s future at Chelsea is not determined by the last two games and that they were “make or break” for Potter. The Englishman has clearly not had it easy since making the move to London.

The Blues have remained a threat in the matches, but their inability to score has been the main issue. Yet Potter, who has been criticized for having no character, felt some comfort after his side’s 1-0 win against Leeds United and 2-0 win against Dortmund.

Carragher asserts that Chelsea will undoubtedly fire the 47-year-old even if the Blues win the Champions League this season. Former Liverpool defender argued in an interview with CBS Sport (h/t Express.UK), that these victories would not change anything, saying:

“The fans aren’t going to change after one game, but I think this gives him time to get them on board,”

“He’s going to be there until the end of the season now. There were questions a few days ago as journalists were getting fed information from the club that he could be on a knife-edge.”

Given that we still have a long way to go and only a few months left, Potter could be dismissed or not depending on how our season goes.

Carragher may be correct that the recent victories didn’t really change anything because they served as some form of consolation for the England manager. Yet, the way we played in those games demonstrated just how strong our team is.

And now Potter appears to have the solution to assembling a winning team. But these victories were crucial, and the players truly displayed the character that the manager had been hoping to see all game.
