“It’s a major game”- Jamie Carragher predicts Chelsea’s UCL decider vs Borussia Dortmund

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is confident that Chelsea can eke out a win against Borussia Dortmund

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher feels Chelsea still possess the potential to defeat Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League second-leg showdown on Tuesday night

After the German team’s 1-0 triumph at Signal Iduna Park last month, the two teams enter the second leg. Given that a loss can have an effect on Graham Potter’s future, this game could be significant for him.

In the last match, just Karim Adeyemi’s lone goal separated the two teams; however, the Blues are now in a position to erase the deficit and guarantee their spot in the competition’s final eight.

To guarantee their advancement to the next round, the Blues will need to accomplish something they haven’t done since the beginning of the year: score more than one goal in a game.

This will be a massive task given Chelsea have not been clinical in front of the goal. The forwards will have to be at their clinical best against the German side.

However, Carragher is confident they will succeed in this match, (h/t Football.London), Speaking to Sky Sports, the former defender stated:

“It’s a huge game. There was a lot of talk before the Leeds game about the pressure on Graham Potter and him potentially losing his job. I think, from Graham Potter’s point of view, winning that game [against Leeds] probably gives them a bit of breathing room ahead of the Dortmund game.

“I still expect them to get through, Chelsea. They dominated Dortmund in the first leg. They find themselves behind but I think they were by far the better team so I expect them to go through.”

Despite the club’s ongoing difficulties, analysts and supporters still believe we can turn things around against Dortmund. Carragher is aware of what it takes to mount a comeback because he was a member of the Liverpool team that overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat AC Milan in the Champions League final in 2005.

Yet, given that Liverpool came back from a 3-0 deficit and we are just down one goal, the circumstances are very different. Potter, hopefully, will have a solution. This is a team we had never faced before in a competitive game before this season, which gives us barely anything on paper to draw inspiration from, or even a point of reference.

The players also know what is riding on in this one match. It has the potential to make our season go from a disaster to one that fans can still recall fondly a few years down the line. A good cup run and can really comb over some bad memories from a season that looks almost unsalvageable if we go out of Europe.
