Romelu Lukaku will return to Chelsea in the summer transfer window as confirmed by Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta. He also added that the Nerazzuri have no plans to make the loan arrangement permanent.
In an effort to solve their goal-scoring problems, Chelsea signed the Belgian forward ahead of the 2021–22 season. The 29-year-old struggled to live up to expectations and was loaned out to Inter for the 2022–23 season.
He has played in 14 Serie A games this season, scoring just three goals, and missed most of them due to injury. The Belgian superstar has missed 12 Serie A games, and his performance has dramatically diminished since the MVP-winning campaign with the Nerazzurri in 2020-21.
Chelsea, who have struggled to score goals this season, will want to add a striker in the summer transfer window. While Luikaku’s return will give them a ready-mate solution of sorts, it remains to be seen if he still has a future at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea and Inter Milan have both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League and could play one another when the draws take place. In an interview with Sky Italia (h/t Daily Mail), the CEO immediately affirmed that they would send the player back to Chelsea, saying:
‘’The loan was for one season, so on June 30, regardless of how well he plays, he’ll go back to Chelsea.’’
‘’This has been an unprecedented season. I’m referring, of course, to the World Cup. The problems we’ve experienced have been experienced by other clubs and the players who played at the World Cup too.”
The Blues will need to find Lukaku a long-term club since retaining him would be a waste of the money he will make here, and returning to Chelsea won’t make sense given his back-to-back disastrous seasons.
Perhaps if he had a different season, the team would have thought about bringing him back and giving him another chance or under Potter’s system he could have found his footing.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the case now; instead, we need to find a young, reliable striker since Lukaku is getting close to 30 and finding it difficult to sustain his consistency in Europe.
