Chelsea fans have been eagerly anticipating news regarding Mason Mount and his contract extension, and their hopes were somewhat addressed when Blues boss Graham Potter spoke about the situation.
A Chelsea boy through and through, Mount finds himself in a very weird position at the club that he grew up at. After years of undroppable performances for the Blues, the English midfielder has struggled, like the rest of the team this season.
Mount has been an integral part of Chelsea’s squad over the past few years. However, with a change in management, new owners, new coaches and a transfer market spending spree, the Englishman now finds himself as a bench player.
His creativity, work rate, and ability to score goals have made him a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge. It’s no wonder that fans have been concerned about his contract situation and whether he will remain at the club long-term.
However, Potter’s comments as quoted by Football. London suggest that Mount’s future at the club is not his primary concern. Instead, he is focused on improving the team’s results and performances.
“Mason, for us, has been great to work with. He has been top. He is suffering like the rest of us because we want to do better and have better results. In terms of the contract, that’s between him and the club”
Potter’s comments also highlight the pressure that the team is currently under. The Blues are currently struggling to find form, having won just one game in 2023 across all competitions so far.
The pressure is mounting on the team and their head coach to turn things around, and Potter seems aware of this. The next few games could be make or break for the former Brighton manager.
While Potter’s comments may not have given fans a definitive answer regarding Mount’s contract situation, they do provide some reassurance. The fact that Potter recognizes Mount’s value to the team should make him feel good.
A win against Leeds United, and more importantly, a solid performance will go a long way in getting him some time. Let’s see if the Blues can do that.
