“Luxury player” pundit tells Chelsea how they can make sensational loanee’s deal permanant

Joao Felix recalled Chelsea stint in 2024 New Year post

Glen Johnson outlines how Chelsea could sign Joao Felix permanently from Atletico Madrid

Chelsea have shown considerable interest in signing Joao Felix on a permanent deal at the end of the season but will have to meet the hefty valuation Atletico Madrid have set.

Despite outbidding teams like Manchester United and Arsenal with a sizable transfer fee to secure the Portuguese attacker, there is no provision in the contract for the move to Stamford Bridge become permanent in the summer.

If the Blues do decide to sign Felix, they will need to renegotiate with Diego Simeone’s team. However, it might be challenging to secure a long-term contract for him.

Despite his strained relationship with Simeone, Atletico were emphatic that they would not trade the 24-year-old in January and would only authorise a loan. But if Chelsea match the Portuguese valuation then the Spanish side could be forced into changing their mind.

Graham Potter has given Felix more flexibility to move around the attacking line, which has led to his great performance, and he has one goal in six games in a Blues jersey. The freedom offered to him at Chelsea is fr better than the rigid style that stifles him in Spain.

Johnson also gave advice to the Blues on how to sign Felix from the Spanish team (h/t Express), and while speaking to Betfred, he said:

“He’s a player that’s technically very good and has a good football brain; however, I just believe that Chelsea have bigger issues at the moment in terms of laying their foundation and finding the spine of their team.”

“He’s a great player, and they should look to sign him permanently, but they shouldn’t if they have to break the bank for him because they’ve got bigger fires to put out currently.”

Meeting Felix’ transfer cost may be challenging, but if Boehly is truly sold, we could renegotiate the deal. And the Portuguese player has been great for us; despite his age, he has added a lot of expertise to our attacking line and can also help the club’s young players with his experience.

Despite not being particularly prolific, Felix may truly thrive at Chelsea given his work rate in attack. The team needs a creative player who can open up opportunities for strikers, and Felix fits that description.

It was not anticipated that he would adapt rapidly to the Premier League, and if we are successful in making his loan a permanent one, our attack line will be loaded with great players come the following season.
