Christian Pulisic reveals his favoured position as a message to Graham Potter
Chelsea and USMNT forward Christian Pulisic revealed that he favours playing in a position behind the striker as a message to boss Graham Potter.
Pulisic has been used in a number of different positions by Thomas Tuchel before and Potter now. Both have used him as a wing-back as well.
But, we all know that the American international likes to operate in the final third of the field and help the team by scoring or assisting goals. His attributes are well-suited to do that too.
The former Borussia Dortmund player just confirmed that and says this when asked about his favoured position (h/t Football.London):
“I think it’s a tough one for me. I think I’ve demonstrated qualities in a few different attacking positions. I feel like my best position on the field is something like being in behind a striker, potentially off of the left side, and having a bit of freedom to manoeuvre, understanding where I need to be to create and helping my team score goals.
“I definitely feel stronger when I can come in inside onto my right foot – and dribbling or running in behind is another strength of mine. So that area behind the striker, potentially from the left side is my best position”
If we decipher Pulisic’s explanation, he basically likes to play on the inside left channel with the freedom to cut inside on his right foot. He is one of the best in the game when allowed to do that.
Having arrived from Dortmund in 2019, the 24-year-old has struggled to deliver performances for Chelsea consistently. We will be surprised if he stays at Stamford Bridge beyond the end of this season. His contract expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt).
But, if we talk about the now, the Blues have important games coming up in April and May. There is a two-legged quarter-final tie in the Champions League against Real Madrid awaiting alongside key league games.
Irrespective of what his future looks like, Pulisic could still have an important role to play to shape up the last part of Chelsea’s season in a positive way. His pace, directness on the ball and finishing prowess could come in handy in big games where the margins are small.

We hope that Potter plays him in the position he likes because that is probably the safest way to get the best out of a forward player.
