Tammy Abraham may solve the striker shortage at Chelsea according to Chris Sutton (h/t The Metro). The pundit has pushed the Blues to re-sign him from AS Roma.
The 25-year-old departed the team in 2021 when Romelu Lukaku was signed by Chelsea. But the latter’s failure to make an impact has cost the Blues dear, leading them to scour the market for a striker.
Abraham, meanwhile, had a successful season at Roma, netting 17 goals in 37 Serie A contests while playing under Jose Mourinho in the 2021–22 season. While he has dropped off this season, his ability is clear and the best years of his career are still ahead of him.
Nevertheless, after failing to establish himself with the team, Lukaku was loaned back to Inter Milan. And in the summer, the Blues will be unlikely to re-integrate him into a priority role.
Chelsea are now looking for a highly experienced striker who can break their striker’s curse. Abraham may be that acquisition, in Sutton’s opinion, despite his solid yet unspectacular first spell at Chelsea.
Yet to get the England international back to west London, the Blues will need to activate the £68 million release fee in Abraham’s deal, which is rumoured to go into effect in July.
Sutton advised Chelsea to make an offer, (h/t Metro) and entice him back to Stamford Bridge in a statement to betting sites.
‘’Buying Tammy back is one of those that I could see happening. I think he’s done pretty well at Roma. The criticism of Chelsea is that while they have lots of creative players, they don’t actually have somebody to stick the ball in the net.”
‘So I actually think it would be a smart piece of business to bring Tammy Abraham back to Chelsea.’
Given that he only had one productive season at Roma and that he has only scored six goals in 27 Serie A games this season, signing him for next season might not be a sensible choice.
Instead, it would be preferable for him to continue playing for Roma, where he is getting sufficient game time and developing his name.
His cumulative scoring total at Chelsea was 30 goals in 82 games, but he scored 34 goals in nine additional games at Roma in just two seasons, which indicates that he is having a better season in Serie A. Due to Chelsea’s need for a more effective striker, who can remain consistent in front of goal, it is also unlikely that the Blues would sign him for the upcoming season.
