Chelsea’s defensive ace outlines plans to end club’s goalscoring woes

Chelsea star Wesley Fofana offers input on the team’s goal-scoring strategy

Wesley Fofana discussed how Chelsea defeated Leeds United and the strategies used to secure their first victory in six games. Graham Potter was only able to win twice in 2023, the second against the Yorkshire outfit at the weekend thanks to the Frenchman’s goal in the second half.

The former Leicester City player scored his second goal of the year after opening the scoring in a 3-0 victory over AC Milan in his penultimate game before being out for almost four months with an injury.

In addition to forming a successful connection alongside Benoit Badieshile, he was brought in to take the position of the injured Thiago Silva.

In addition to scoring, his effort against Leeds was a remarkable all-around showing from a player who has only made a comeback to first-team duty.

Even from defence, in his brief career thus far, he has not been a prolific scorer; however, there was much more to his header on Saturday than first appeared.

Speaking at the press conference after the match, Fofana gave Chelsea’s plan for scoring goals (h/t Football.London):

“Not nerves but excitement for the win, the fans and the club. It is a difficult situation but everyone in the club pushes for a win. Yesterday in training we worked on set-pieces and today I scored one. It’s a good feeling.”

Fofana made a statement return after helping Chelsea win against Leeds with a goal.

One of the finest routes to score goals is from set pieces, especially for defenders who are strong in the air and can outmuscle opponents. And we are fortunate to have defenders with good aerial skills like Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Fofana.

Nonetheless, we have attackers who can score goals, we should not rely on defence to save us from a set-piece, as against Leeds we produced several chances that were all missed.

More Chelsea News:

Attackers must step up and start taking advantage of opportunities. It’s all and well and good if we score from set pieces but goals from open play are very, very important for a club of our stature – much more than those from dead-ball situations because it showcases how good we are at the sport and the extent of control we can exercise on opponents.
