Chelsea eager to beat Manchester United for Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier
Chelsea are prepared to outcompete Manchester United to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who is valued at £30 million. According to Football Insider (h/t Sun), Chelsea are quite interested in signing Meslier this summer.
Meslier, who moved from Lorient to Leeds on a season-long loan in 2019 and made the switch permanent the following year for almost £5 million.
Although he only appeared 11 times during the club’s promotion-winning campaign, Meslier’s presence has been seen from the goalie position since he arrived at the club. And has subsequently cemented himself as Leeds’ starting goalie.
Chelsea have now made an offer for the goalie; however, they will face competition from Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Chelsea are also in discussions with Edouard Mendy regarding his contract but they are understood to be going nowhere with it. The Senegal international could, hence, be on his way out.
Kepa, meanwhile, has frequently conceded simple goals and has also been erratic between the sticks, which has led to the Blues finding a new goalkeeper.
Meslier, who is a target for Chelsea, has played in 26 Premier League games so far this year and has allowed 46 goals while recording six clean sheets.
We need a new keeper who has confidence in front of the net since Kepa hasn’t looked in top form and has often conceded goals, especially long shots.
Mendy’s future at Chelsea also appears uncertain, and he may be sold. He is 31 years old, and Potter has consistently chosen Kepa over him, so he would not want to be employed as a backup goalkeeper.
Meslier would be a nice addition; he is young, and more intriguingly, he made a name for himself at Leeds at the age of just 23. He has been a regular starter for the Whites and has played every minute of league football.
