24-year-old Chelsea star opts out of international call up following fitness concerns

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount to not join up with England national team squad for Euro 2024 qualifiers

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount will not join up with the England national squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers during the international break, according to football.london.

The 24-year-old has missed the last few fixtures for the Blues due to a pelvic injury. Yet, the Three Lions had included the playmaker in their 25-man squad.

Gareth Sothgate’s team are set to take on Italy and Ukraine in the coming days. However, Mount will not feature for them and will instead be given time to recover from his fitness issue.

Apart from the 24-year-old, Raheem Sterling is also set to miss the Euro qualifiers, with a hamstring injury forcing the winger to the sidelines. However, Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Conot Gallagher from the Stamford Bridge side are in the squad.

England have enjoyed a relatively fruitful spell under Southgate’s management. The Three Lions reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018 and just missed out on the Euro 2020 title, losing to Italy on penalties.

Mount has been a pivotal player for England over the last two major tournaments. The 24-year-old featured in all but one game for them in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The midfielder made his way through the ranks at Chelsea. After enjoying a fruitful loan spell at Derby under Frank Lampard, the former Blues head coach gave the English national an opportunity in the Stamford Bridge side’s senior squad.

Since then, Mount has established himself as a regular starter for the West London club and has been one of our best players in the last two seasons. However, of late, the playmaker’s minutes under Graham Potter have reduced.

The 24-year-old is not enjoying his best spell in the current campaign. Hopefully, the midfielder will get back to full fitness soon. As for Southgate, he has the likes of Jude Bellingham, James Maddison and Phil Foden to call upon.
