Player News: Chelsea could rip up underused star’s contract this summer

Chelsea could rip up the contract of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the summer

According to Sport (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea could terminate the contract of striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the end of this season, having only signed him last summer.

Chelsea signed the former Arsenal marksman from Barcelona on the deadline day of the last summer transfer window on a two-year deal, with an option to extend that by a year.

The 33-year-old has struggled to make any sort of impact in the team and was omitted from the Champions League squad for the knockout phase.

The report revealed that Aubameyang is ready to take a pay cut to sign for Barcelona in the summer. If Chelsea rips his contract up, he would be a free agent anyway.

The Guinean was in the Barcelona dressing room celebrating their El Clasico win over Real Madrid on Sunday. If only we needed more indications from him as to where his inner allegiance lies.

After letting go of Romelu Lukaku on loan and selling Timo Werner last summer, Chelsea had to sign a striker to overcome their goal-scoring issues of the last few years.

Sad to say that issue still remains even when one of Europe’s best marksmen is in the squad. So, it makes sense for the club to rip his contract and find a different striker.

It won’t be an overstatement to say that Graham Potter’s men do not have a reliable goal scorer in the squad. The likes of Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix can chip in, but they are not your 20-goal bankers per season.

If this team wants to take the next step in their development, adding more fear to the opposition back-line needs to happen. That is only possible if a genuine goal scorer is playing.

What that player would do is open up spaces for the creative pieces in the team to operate at a higher level compared to what they are now.
