Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana is set to withdraw from the France national team squad for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers after suffering a hamstring injury, according to L’Equipe (h/t football.london).
In our last Premier League game against Everton at Stamford Bridge, the 22-year-old was substituted in the 87th minute. Subsequently, the centre-back was seen with ice strapped around his leg.
Fofana has earned his first call-up to Didier Deschamps’ team. Les Bleus will face the Netherlands and Ireland in the international break. Unfortunately, it looks like the Blues’ defender will not be able to take part.
The French national has been impressive in the Premier League since signing for Leicester City in the summer of 2020. However, after an impressive start to life in England, the centre-back missed most of the previous campaign due to an injury.
Chelsea opted to buy the 22-year-old last summer. Unfortunately, injury issues have hampered his time at the West London club as well. After making just two appearances for the Blues, he suffered a long-term injury.
Fofana only returned to the fold in February. He has been impressive in the Stamford Bridge side’s backline in the absence of the ever-reliable Thiago Silva.
Unfortunately, it looks like the French national will be on the sidelines once again. However, it remains to be seen for how long.
At the moment, Graham Potter can rely on Kalidou Koulibaly, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah in the defensive positions. Marc Cucurella has also played on a number of occasions in a back-three.
Thankfully, Chelsea will not face any team until next month. Therefore, the injured players will have some time to recuperate. Hopefully, Fofana’s injury is nothing serious and he is able to play for us against Aston Villa next.
