Chelsea boss Graham Potter is hoping that he could persuade Mason Mount to stay at the club but understands that he may concede defeat in it.
Mount’s current deal at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). The 24-year-old wanted the wages of his new deal to reflect his status in the squad. He has rejected two offers from the club so far.
It was revealed a few days ago that Chelsea have halted talks with the player till the summer as they do not want to distract the manager. If no agreement is reached in the summer, they will sell the England international.
Here’s what Potter said when asked about the contract situation of Mount and his future (h/t The Athletic):
“My feelings for Mason are clear. He is a fantastic person firstly but sometimes these things happen. They are just complicated and it is best that I speak little about it, let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties.
“Yes [if he wants Mount to stay] but I am not naive. I know it is an important time for him and an important contract. These things have to be right for him and his family. It’s important he makes a decision on that basis.”
Well, this quote does tell us that the manager has almost given up on the situation. It is clear that he wants the player to stay, but there are certain things not under his control.
It was reported in the Guardian that Manchester United have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Mount. The quoted fee was around £50m. Daily Mail has revealed that Newcastle United are in the race, a club Tony Cascarino wants the player to go.
Mount is a quality player who would not only be missed here if he leaves but also do well wherever he goes next. The 24-year-old has the talent and the mindset to do well at clubs such as United and Liverpool. Imagine him under Jurgen Klopp! Scary, isn’t it?
We have spent a lot of money on buying new players. It is time that we knuckle down one of our best assets produced in the last decade. He would do well for us and is a captaincy candidate for the future as well.
