A View From The Bridge

Transfer News: Arsenal closely monitoring 28-year-old Chelsea star

Arsenal closely monitoring the situation of Raheem Sterling at Chelsea

According to 90min (h/t Daily Mail), Arsenal are keeping an eye on the situation of Raheem Sterling at Chelsea with Gunners boss Mikel Arteta being a big fan of the player.

Arteta recently worked with Sterling when the duo were at Manchester City. The former then took the Arsenal job in the 2019/20 season and the latter signed for Chelsea last summer.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, things have not gone smoothly for the England international. He has only scored six goals and assisted three in 25 games in all competitions. Injuries have curtailed his season after the World Cup, but he is now back to full fitness.

We all know that Chelsea are not at their best moment. They are struggling to even score goals, let alone win games. The prospect of playing Champions League football is more or less dependent on them winning that competition this year. Is that a realistic target? No.

As a result of the team struggle, Sterling is sandwiched in the situation. The 28-year-old is still one of the best forwards in the Premier League who can impact games with goals, assists and relentless running on or off the ball in the final third.

Keeping those things in mind and seeing Chelsea spend £88.5m on Mykhaylo Mudryk in January – a player who operates in a position similar to Sterling, it does feel as if the club could let go of the latter in the summer if the right offer comes.

From Sterling’s viewpoint, why would he want to stay at a club where his game time isn’t guaranteed despite being one of the best and most highly experienced players in the squad?

More Chelsea News:

If Arsenal makes a move, the 28-year-old could well be attracted by the prospect of them playing in the Champions League, along with a chance to form a reunion with Arteta. Chelsea would be foolish to stand in the player’s way if that happens.
