Thiago Silva reveals he is in talks with Chelsea over a new contract
Speaking to ESPN (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has revealed that he is in talks with the club over a new contract and feels that the club needs him.
The Brazil captain, whose contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the coming summer (Transfermarkt), has hinted that an announcement regarding his new deal will be done in the next few days.
Silva is adamant and mindful of the fact that the current Chelsea side needs him as they embark on a rebuilding procedure following a poor run of results in the first half of this season.
Here’s what the 38-year-old said regarding his future in west London (h/t Daily Mail):
“We are negotiating [a new deal]. Everything will probably happen in the next few days. My intention, and that of the club as well, is to stay together. I know that the club needs me right now.
“I am here to be able to help, they are young players, anyway. I know that, with my experience, I can help in this process of rebuilding the club, I’m here for that, willing to do this, however, I know that my responsibility is very great.”
Chelsea fans will be happy to know this update. We know how good Silva has been since the time he arrived at the club back in 2020. His performances have been age-defying for some time now.
If anything is to go by, the Brazilian has gotten better the more he has played for us. His performance against Liverpool at Anfield two weeks ago was a thing of art. That coming from a 38-year-old was simply miraculous. He can match the pace of attackers, shepherd them into safer territory and also guide the young players around him.
Although very early days, he is gradually forming a very good partnership with new signing Benoit Badiashile at the back. The former AS Monaco defender is able to learn from the veteran and is complementing him well.

If Silva stays for another two years, we won’t be surprised if his levels don’t drop. With his experience, quality and knowledge of the game, he can be a handful for the squad even when he is not playing every game. At the moment though, he is undroppable.
