Speaking to Stake.com (h/t Football.London), former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero believes that new Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez will succeed in the Premier League and won’t be fazed by the price tag.
On the deadline day of the January transfer window, Chelsea broke the British transfer record to sign Fernandez from Benfica for a fee of around £106.8m.
Since then, the 2022 World Cup winner has played three games and looked a part in the team. The 22-year-old is expected to be a long-term midfield conductor for the Blues.
Here’s what Aguero said about Fernandez, his transfer to Chelsea and why the big-money move won’t faze the youngster (h/t Football.London):
“Enzo has shown time and time again, both in his first club River Plate and in the Argentina national team and Benfica, that he does not feel pressure and assumes his responsibility on the pitch naturally. And he no longer has to do with how much was paid for him.
“We saw it in his Chelsea debut. He made the team play and almost reached the goal – and it was his first game. In the second he put in a masterful assist for Joao Félix’s goal. He will surely have a very important progression in the Premier League.”
As much as it has been an impressive start to his career at Chelsea, the game against Borussia Dortmund showed there are improvements to be made in Fernandez’s game before he can be labelled as a complete midfielder. The way Karim Adeyemi schooled him in a one-on-one situation in the transition before scoring the winner was a bit worrying.
Excluding that, the 22-year-old has been a great addition to the Blues side. That Adeyemi goal shows that he could do with a midfielder alongside him who can do the box-to-box running, allowing him to dictate the tempo of the game from the quarterback position.
There is no doubt that getting the World Cup’s Young Player of the Tournament is an excellent business by Chelsea. The money spent was not in either the club’s or the player’s control. We all knew Benfica were adamant about the latter’s release clause to be paid for the deal to be done.
So, it is only right that people do not associate Fernandez with a price tag, but rather judge his performances based on what happens on the field.
