Graham Potter acknowledged that he understood why Chelsea supporters were jeering at him and his underwhelming team after their wretched season reached a new nadir with a 1-0 home loss to Southampton.
Chelsea entered their match against the Saints have won just one of their previous nine games overall since the start of the year. In theory, Southampton offered a fantastic opportunity to get back to winning ways, but Potter’s team is proving specialists at blowing opportunities and did so once more.
And as Chelsea have now lost two games in a row across all competitions, it is further questioned whether the former Brighton Hove & Albion manager is still competent in managing Chelsea.
Fans had supported the manager for the majority of this season, but on Saturday it seemed as though the mood was turning as the full-time whistle was met with loud jeers following yet another no-show under the 47-year-old.
A need for a striker was once again highlighted in the game, as Chelsea have now scored just four times in their last 10 outings.
Potter argued, prior to the game (h/t Mirror.UK), that the freshly constituted team was going well despite a dismal string of outcomes. But everyone’s tolerance is running out, and he understood the frustration expressed by fans at the final siren, as he said:
“After a 1-0 defeat at home, any criticism you get is understandable. We’ve had a tough period and are integrating young players into the Premier League. When results don’t go your way, it’s tough.”
Given that we have lost two consecutive games now, there are undoubtedly questions about whether the 47-year-old deserves to be Chelsea’s manager. How long will Todd Bethel continue to support Potter?
Considering the frustration of the supporters is now beginning which will pressure the board into making a speedy decision over Potter’s future at Chelsea.
Despite the fact that he has had time, it looks like the club is still being held back by something, and Potter now has less time to figure it out.
