“It isn’t good enough”- Graham Potter gives verdict on his Chelsea future after Tottenham defeat

Graham Potter says he wants to remain in charge despite horrible run at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Graham Potter is aware that the pressure on his job is swelling in the wake of Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane each scored twice in the second half as Tottenham defeated the Blues for the third time in a row. Despite the team’s dismal run of just two victories in 15 games, which has caused some of the fanbase to turn against their manager.

The lineup that started the loss to Southampton last week had six changes under head coach Potter but still could not scrape out a win. The Blues have recorded just one win in their last 11 games across competitions.

After the game, Potter indicated he wants to continue working at Chelsea despite the results as the 47-year-old commented on his future at The Blues (via Football.London):

“Whenever you hear that, I know the responsibility. It’s not good enough for this club. I take full responsibility for those results. It isn’t good enough for Chelsea. I know the personalities and qualities of the team. A tough period of time. Confidence isn’t massively high.

“Of course, it’s the same in any job, anywhere. If results aren’t good enough, which they aren’t, you can’t rely on support forever. My job is to keep going.”

Game by game, the 47-year-old’s tenure at Chelsea seems to be drawing to a close, and despite his changing tactics or playing with different players each game, there hasn’t been any sign of a positive change.

Potter’s position at Chelsea now looks to be too demanding for him, and he just cannot handle having so many players on and finding ways to use them during the games. It also appears that he needs a lot of time to come up with an answer.

The pressure may have been less at Brighton & Hove Albion, though, since Potter led them to promotion and stabilised their status as a Premier League team. Sure, that isn’t an easy task to do.

But while it can’t and shouldn’t be directly compared to the job that lies for him at Chelsea, Potter is evidently buckling under the increased attention and pressure that he has experienced recently.

That may seem stressful for Potter here, but he has faith in his ability to handle the tasks he faces at Chelsea. The players must start to produce better performances to bail out their manager because it is clear that he is the one facing the majority of the criticism.

That being said, and while it may sound repetitive, the Blues need to be patient with Potter and at least give him this calendar year to prove his worth. They took a big decision hiring him for Thomas Tuchel and the owners must now stand by it until it becomes clear that they were totally wrong.
