According to 90min (h/t Football.London), former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has rejected the approach from Todd Boehly to manage Chelsea.
This news has come amidst the intense pressure current Chelsea manager Graham Potter is under following the defeat to Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
But, the Telegraph reported a day ago that Boehly and co. believe Potter deserves more time and a chance to spend a pre-season with the squad. The former Brighton boss was appointed on September 8, weeks after this season had already begun.
On the contrary, some in the Chelsea hierarchy do not buy into this fact and want to replace Potter sooner rather than later. Their initial approach to hiring Pochettino has gone in the bin.
Whether the former Spurs manager has rejected Chelsea on the basis of his loyalty towards the north London club or he believes the club is in a mess, remains to be seen. Both reasons do sound reasonable, to be honest.
The defeat to Southampton meant it is two wins in the last 14 league games for the Blues. They are 11 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham despite spending zillions in the January transfer window.
If those facts were not damning enough, Potter’s men have only managed to score six goals in 11 games since the end of the World Cup. That is simply not good enough!
Big games are around the corner. An away trip to Spurs is due on Sunday before a home game against Leeds United the following weekend. The return leg of the Champions League last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund is coming up on March 7. Chelsea are trailing 1-0 going into that match at Stamford Bridge.
With the backing from the owners, Potter must get better results in the coming weeks. Even if we do not go anywhere in terms of our targets this season, performance improvement is a must.
