Bayer Leverkusen won’t keep loaned out Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi beyond the summer
According to Bild (h/t Chelsea News), German side Bayer Leverkusen have no interest in keeping loaned out Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi beyond the summer due to a drop in performance levels.
The Chelsea academy product, who made a late switch to Leverkusen last summer on a season-long loan, started his time in Germany well. But, the performances have not been great of late and things don’t look good under the stewardship of Xabi Alonso.
If we look at the 22-year-old’s numbers for Leverkusen this season so far, he has produced one goal and one assist in 17 appearances in all competitions. The last time he played more than 60 minutes in a game was before the World Cup.
At Chelsea, Hudson-Odoi’s contract expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). According to The Athletic (subscription required) a few days ago, the England international will decide on his Blues future once his loan spell in German is over.
With 12 months remaining on his contract in June, the club can either sell him for a low price or offer him a new deal. The third option would be to let him go for free in 2024.
With the signings we have made in the forward line in January, it does look tough for a player like Hudson-Odoi to force his way into the side next season. That, combined with the fact that his performances have not been good for Leverkusen, won’t fill Graham Potter with much confidence.

For the player’s sake, we can only hope that he does well for the remainder of this campaign and come back for the Chelsea pre-season high on confidence. If that doesn’t happen, then it would be a sensible option to let him leave permanently.
