Many fans may not have expected Jorginho to move from Chelsea to Arsenal, but the midfielder outlined why he made the switch across London.
The Italian international departed Chelsea in January after five years at Stamford Bridge. The North Londoners paid £12 million to sign the Italian international, a price that could have been more if Jorginho’s deal wasn’t running out.
The Gunners’ primary target was Moises Caicedo, in whom Chelsea were also interested. But Brighton & Hove Albion turned down both clubs’ offers, thus the acquisition of Jorginho has come as a late surprise. Nevertheless, Chelsea acquired Enzo Fernandez from Benfica on deadline day, effectively upgrading on the Azzurri star.
And the ex-Napoli player expressed his happiness at joining the North Londoners while describing how Mikel Arteta facilitated his transfer to Arsenal. In an interview with DZAN, the 31-year-old revealed why he switched from Chelsea to Arsenal, according to Football Italy (via Football.London):
“He [Arteta] called me and it was all very quick, we made the deal in less than 48 hours. I had spoken to Chelsea, and I knew I was no longer part of their plans.
“I wanted to progress in my career, and the Arsenal project suits me.” It’s a young team that plays good football and fits my characteristics.
“I considered every scenario and made the decision. Sometimes you must accept that you are out of a project and that things come to an end.”
The Italian played a big role during his time at Chelsea. But it seemed his time there was over as Todd Boehly wanted to develop the club’s future by bringing in young players. On top of that, the 31-year-old had not been very effective for the team of late, struggling with form and injuries.
Also, his contract had only six months left, and we were able to sell him in time to avoid losing him for free, (Transfermarkt). One could argue it was better for us to get something rather than nothing for the Euro 2020 winner.
The loss of the Italian midfielder may have shocked teammates and supporters alike, but we should put it behind us now since there are more important things to consider.
