Pundit says Graham Potter ‘will be worried’ for his Chelsea job after huge spending

Jamie Carragher says Chelsea boss Graham Potter would be worried for his job after the heavy spending

Speaking in the Overlap Show (h/t Evening Standard), Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has said that Chelsea boss Graham Potter would be worried for his job following the club’s heavy spending in the transfer window.

Chelsea have spent over £600m in the last two transfer windows, including making big-money signings in January. They spent £88.5m on Mykahilo Mudryk and broke the British transfer record to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.

To avoid the Financial Fair Play (FFP) punishment, they have offered long-term contracts to players to amortise the transfer fee for the duration of their contracts.

While Carragher admitted that Chelsea may have found a way around FFP, he is worried for Potter. Here’s what he said (h/t Evening Standard):

“Spending money doesn’t guarantee success. Manchester City have spent an awful lot of money but have had great expertise with different managers. Manchester United is a great example of this from the other side of it – you look at their transfer spending over the last ten years, there’s not much of a difference between themselves and Manchester City.

“With Chelsea, from Graham Potter’s point of view he must be thinking – what is going on here? You can dress it up like he’s delighted with a big squad and all these great players coming in, but he’ll be worried for his job.”

One cannot deny that the pressure is on Potter to deliver. As much as the owners would back their manager, they won’t be spending this kind of money to not get returns sooner rather than later.

While it might be difficult to reach the heights this season after an underwhelming first half, the manager can at least show that he can get the best out of this team.

It is an important next three months for the club and Potter. They are still way off the mark from a top-four finish, but there are 17 league games yet to be played. The Champions League knockout ties start next week. Chelsea entertain Borussia Dortmund in the last-16 stage.

More Chelsea News:

If Potter remains in the job come the summer window, he should prioritise signing a top striker. This squad has a lot of bases covered after the January window barring a player who can score 20+ goals a season. Till then, they have to share the goals among the forwards.
