Pundit explains why Graham Potter is facing ‘an unmanageable situation’ at Chelsea

Rob Green thinks Graham Potter is dealing with an uncontrollable problem at Chelsea

Rob Green reckons Graham Potter is facing an unmanageable situation at Chelsea following the club’s abundance of signings in the January transfer window.

In September, Potter was appointed after Thomas Tuchel was sacked, but the 47-year-old has only seen a string of poor results. The Blues have won just two of their last 14 games overall and were defeated 1-0 on Saturday by struggling Southampton in the Premier League.

Yet, Todd Boehly has assured that Potter’s acquisition is part of a long-term initiative, and poor results won’t affect his future at Chelsea.

It is believed the team needs time to gel after a renovation that saw £583 million spent on new players in the previous two transfer windows, with eight new recruits coming in January alone.

But Green feels that adding so many players during the transfer window has placed pressure on Potter that is nearly impossible to manage, and he is concerned that things may only get worse.

The goalkeeper was speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live and said (h/t Independent) that the former Swansea City manager will have a hard time giving chances to so many players, as he said:

“With the amount of players there, it’s an unmanageable situation. Once the crowd turns, it starts to get ugly, and the players get affected and go into their shells. You can already see it from the players’ perspective, from an attacking perspective, and then it gets harder.

“With so many players coming in, he is uncertain on his starting line-up so he has chopped and changed and you never get continuity when you do that.”

Is Graham Potter incapable of leading Chelsea?

But Boehly has made it clear that the team’s performance in the Champions League this year or their chances of making the UCL the next season will not have an impact on Potter’s future at Stamford Bridge.

Yet, this doesn’t mean Potter shouldn’t change things around and if we keep playing this way while we have less time, it will be difficult to maintain our position in the top 10. Potter understands which young players are deserving of starting each game, and he will undoubtedly give them a chance.

He is more than adept at getting the best out of what he has, as he showed at Brighton & Hove Albion. The problem here could be the huge price tags and expectations that hang above these new signings, considering the level of impatience in modern football.
