Since the beginning of the season, there have been ominous clouds hanging over the club. Todd Boehly fired Thomas Tuchel and replaced him with Graham Potter in order to find winning ways. During a brief period of success, Chelsea sank into a hole from which it has not yet emerged.
Since Graham Potter’s first loss as Chelsea manager against Brighton, the team has dropped to 10th place, 11 points outside of the top four.
However, Potter never had a full roster, their bad run was also accompanied by an injury issue that had an impact on the team’s performance. The club’s injury situation was so serious that Boehly had to sign a large number of players in order to form a competitive team.
The £600 million invested over the previous two transfer windows is only intensifying the scrutiny. Also, addressing a press conference prior to the match versus Tottenham Hotspur (source: Football.London), London Potter emphasised how much the club has suffered by saying:
“We then had the World Cup, and then the club invested a lot of money in the squad, and the pressure, expectation, and noise went up.” But the players we got, they’re not 28-year-old, 400-game Premier League players.
“They are young players that take time to adapt to, and at the same time we’ve got the injured players who have to get up to speed to play in the Premier League.”
The 47-year-old has been under a great deal of stress, and the addition of new players has added to his workload. You try to figure out who deserves to start each match, game by game.
Since we don’t have enough time and the game against Spurs will be very important, just a handful of our new signings have demonstrated it, and we hope the others soon regain their rhythm.
I have confidence that Potter, the former manager of Swansea City, will find a way to restore Chelsea to their previous level of play, even if it takes a full season.
