Following a 1-0 defeat to Southampton, Chelsea manager Graham Potter was booed by fans, as it appeared the fans don’t trust the 47-year-old at the helm anymore, and the defeat against the Saints leaves the Blues with just two wins in their last 14 games in all competitions.
The West Londoners will now face Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League on Sunday lunchtime, and going into this game on the back of a defeat doesn’t seem to raise their spirits.
Right back, Gary Neville of Manchester United acknowledged Chelsea’s difficulties and offered his opinion on what Potter may do to help Chelsea.
The former Valencia manager believes the former Swansea City manager was under tremendous pressure when he told the following to his Sky Sports podcast (h/t Metro.UK):
“Graham Potter is under massive pressure; you can see it in his face. I watched the highlights of their game against Southampton, and you saw all the chances they missed. You heard the boos at the final whistle too, and it feels a little ominous for Potter.”
“It’s been chaotic and a little mismanaged under the new owners. They’ve invested heavily and put their money where their mouth is, but it won’t be a successful project when you’ve got 33 players there all looking at the manager and a manager who wants to build a measured project.”
Things are now becoming worse for Chelsea, and two straight losses have definitely placed them under pressure—especially for the former manager of Brighton & Hove Albion.
Potter seems to be out of his depth at times but it’s not easy for him when Todd Boehly is going out and bringing in players by the bucketload for him to manage. It’s wise to note that most of them aren’t finished products and are, in many ways, inexperienced.
Now that we will be visiting Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it will be one of the most important games for the 47-year-old manager. It can’t be long before our owners start to consider changing managers because a top-four finish would surely be seen as a must.
