A View From The Bridge

Rival PL boss vindicates Chelsea’s January transfer approach

Fulham boss Marco Silva defends the heavy spending done by Chelsea

As quoted by Stowmarket Mercury (h/t Football.London), Fulham boss Marco Silva has defended the heavy spending done by Chelsea in the last two transfer windows.

After a fairly active summer window, Chelsea were super active in the January window. They went on to sign eight new players in the month, breaking the British transfer record to buy Enzo Fernandez in the process.

As a result of that, Graham Potter now has a massive squad of talented players to pick his playing team. The Blues boss admitted that there will be awkward conversations with players as only a certain number can be included in the squad and only 11 can play at a time.

But, calling it not a surprise and praising Chelsea for showing ambition by spending big on new players, here’s Silva (h/t Football.London):

“Last summer, they spent a good amount of money too and they strengthened their squad and they were able to do the same this transfer window and show their power.

“If it is too much money or not, it is not for me to talk about it, but just to show the power and show their ambition to improve the squad. It’s clear with younger players and fresh legs what they are trying to do and lucky them they have all this power to sign new players.”

At a time when it has been easy to criticise the businesses done by Chelsea in the transfer market, it is good to see a rival manager understanding the position of the club to improve the level of the squad.

If the first half of this season was a market, it showed that the squad needed major investment to have a chance of even competing for a top-four finish till May.

We all know that for Chelsea, only winning matters. But, looking at the situation at the table, it was necessary that new players were brought in to hopefully push us up the table.

The Blues are 10th in the league, 10 points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United. The game against Fulham on Friday night could be a start of a run of games where we regain form and make the required jump in the table.

Simultaneously, the pressure is on Potter to deliver because he would have no complaints about the backing he has received.
