If Chelsea decide to dismiss Graham Potter, Frank Leboeuf considers Zinedine Zidane to be the perfect fit for the Blues.
Potter was acquired following Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal, but in his first 25 games as Chelsea’s manager, the 47-year-old has only earned nine victories.
And his tenure at Stamford Bridge has come under criticism after Chelsea fans booed him during their 1-0 loss to Southampton. With Saturday’s loss to Southampton, Chelsea are currently in 10th place in the Premier League, despite the high level of investment at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have won merely two of their last 14 games overall, falling 10 points behind the top four and dangerously close to being eliminated from the Champions League.
Despite Potter’s record and Chelsea’s lacklustre performance, the club’s owners are willing to support the former Brighton manager’s ambitions at the club.
The centre-back believes that if Chelsea were to fire Graham Potter, Zidane should take his place because he might blend in nicely with the Blues. Leboeuf said in an interview with ESPN (h/t Metro.UK), that he would be pleased if Zidane were to manage Chelsea going forward, as he said:
“I don’t know, but it would be a very good idea, I think. I would be very pleased. I’ve never asked him if he wanted to go to England. I asked him if he didn’t speak English, but he responded in English. So, you know, he speaks English a little bit.
“Maybe he could be in charge of Chelsea. I would be very, very happy about that.”
The appointment of a French midfielder who has won three consecutive Champions Leagues as a manager would be a major coup. Given that Zidane was appointed during Real Madrid’s poor season and guided them to the Champions League title in 2015–16, he could be a good choice.
Even more impressive is the fact that he guided Real Madrid to the Champions League semifinals in 2020–21 despite the team’s lack of star players and several of them being injured.
If we are successful in appointing him as our future manager, he will instil a winning mindset in young players and will help them bring the best out of them. He will face a new challenge here – to mould a number of young starlets into future superstars.
But he should test himself in different teams in different situations to truly be considered a legendary manager. That being said, let us wait and see how it turns out with Potter first. It will be very, very harsh to sack him without giving him at least one full season at the club.
