A View From The Bridge

Chris Sutton accuses Chelsea of helping arch-rivals with misguided January transfer move

Chris Sutton believes Chelsea have helped Arsenal by offering them Jorginho

Speaking to Daily Mail, as quoted by Metro, former Chelsea striker and football pundit Chris Sutton feels that the Blues have helped Arsenal in their title bid by giving them midfielder Jorginho.

Arsenal completed the signing of the Italian international on the transfer window deadline day for a deal worth around £12m. The midfielder’s contract at Stamford Bridge was expiring in the summer and he was likely to leave then anyway.

So, from that view, Chelsea have got a profit in this deal. But, Arsenal may not complain about having an experienced midfielder in their squad for such a low price during the January window. The league leaders would benefit from having a player of Jorginho’s track record and quality.

Here’s what Sutton said regarding this move (h/t Metro):

“I’m surprised he’s gone to Arsenal and Chelsea are helping Arsenal.

“I think, from Arsenal’s point of view, he may be the signing which helps him win the Premier League. I think that he’s a really talented player.”

Only time will tell whether letting go of Jorginho now made more sense for some money or if should we have waited till the summer. There is no point complaining if you are a Chelsea supporter though, as Enzo Fernandez is coming to replace Jorginho in the deeper-lying midfield position.

On the face of it, this is an upgrade on quality and dynamism the Blues were after to solidify the midfield department. Jorginho was a good servant of the club, helping us win the Champions League and the Europa League. But, his game had certain limitations.

So, even if he helps Arsenal win the league title, the 31-year-old would not have played many games here when manager Graham Potter has Fernandez at his disposal and N’Golo Kante is not far away from full fitness too.

More Chelsea News:

Hence, as it turns out, this could be a move that suits all parties. For us, it is time to look ahead rather than focus on what Jorginho might do at Arsenal. We have built up a talented squad with the signings made in January. It is up to Potter and his staff to get the best out of them.
