Speaking to the media ahead of the next game against Chelsea (h/t Football.London), West Ham United boss David Moyes has pinpointed that it will take some time for Chelsea boss Graham Potter to gel the new players in.
Chelsea signed eight players during the January transfer window, including breaking the British transfer record to buy Enzo Fernandez from Benfica on deadline day.
One of those eight players – Malo Gusto, was loaned back to his club Lyon for the remainder of this season, while the club awaits to get the work permit for Andrey Santos.
Despite that, Potter has to gel six new players into a side that has struggled for consistency throughout this campaign. Here’s what Moyes said regarding the time it will take (h/t Football.London):
“It can take time, I can tell you that with us bringing new players in. I think when you spend £600million, it should give you half a chance. But money isn’t the only thing to do with football, you’ve got to get the team right, you’ve got to get other parts of it going well. Hopefully, we can give Chelsea a good game, obviously they are a really good team, they’ve got some really talented players they’ve bought in, but they will need time to gel just like the ones we bought in in the summer have taken a bit of time to gel as well.”
A few days ago, speaking in the Overlap, Jamie Carragher talked about how spending money does not guarantee success. He went on to say that Potter would be worried about his job given the financial backing and the situation of the team at the moment.
Make no mistake, the Chelsea boss does have pressure mounted. Although this is the first season in charge of the club, the sort of investment done by the owners suggests that they would be wanting positive results to come sooner rather than later.
While the chance of finishing in the top four this season seems tough, it would be great if the team starts playing well and show that the manager is able to gel them together.
The knockout stage of the Champions League is yet to come too. If we put a run there, who says winning that competition is beyond the realms of possibility?
