According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t Football.London), the long-term Chelsea target and Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries could be available for €40m in the coming summer window.
Romano also confirmed that Premier League clubs were interested in signing Dumfries in the January window, but Inter rejected the approach. However, the situation could change in the summer and the Serie A side could offer to sell the player.
Chelsea are interested in the 26-year-old because his versatility is an asset for any team he plays for. He had an excellent for the Netherlands as well, playing as a right wing-back.
A couple of months ago, Football.London reported that Inter could sell Dumfries against their will because of the financial stress they are in. Chelsea are looking for a player who can deputise and challenge Reece James in the right wing-back department. Hence, they had the Dutchman in their sights.
But, since then the Blues have gone in a different direction. They agreed on a deal to sign Lyon right-back Malo Gusto. They loaned the young Frenchman back to Lyon before getting him permanently in the summer.
After doing that business, is it necessary to go back to Dumfries in the summer? The answer should be no. As good a player as the Dutchman is, his signing won’t serve many purposes for the time to come.
Hence, instead of forking out a good chunk of cash on buying a player of a position for which they have already done business in January, they can save up the funds to strengthen other positions, including the centre-forward area.
After crazy spending in the last two transfer windows, it is time for Chelsea to be sensible in the coming windows. Buying players for the sake of it should be the first thing to guard against. Doing the deal for Dumfries sounds exactly like that.
