Chelsea put on alert as Marcus Thuram confirms he is available for free in the summer
Speaking to Sport1, quoted by Evening Standard, Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has accepted that Chelsea target Marcus Thuram will leave for free in the summer.
The French international has rejected a new contract offer from the German side, showcasing his will to leave them when his contract expires at the end of this season (Transfermarkt).
Thuram was a target for Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United during the January window when a price tag of £8m was quoted because of his contract expiring in the summer.
Here’s what Virkus said when asked about the future of the 25-year-old (h/t Evening Standard):
“With Marcus Thuram, we stretched.
“We have to accept that it’s the even bigger clubs where Marcus might go. The fact that players will leave us for free is not a positive situation and I can’t sugarcoat it.”
While that is disappointing news for Gladbach as they are going to lose a quality player, that too for free in the summer, it is good news for the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and more.
From the Blues’ viewpoint, it is clear we have to invest in the number nine department in the next transfer window. With 23 goals scored in 23 league games, we are 13th in the league table on that metric. Mid-table returns that.
Thuram has the quality and finishing prowess to do well here if we conspire to sign him. The French international, who used to play for Guingamp before moving to Germany in 2019, has scored 14 goals and assisted four in 22 appearances in all competitions this season.

He is a striker who is comfortable operating on either side of the wing. Given that he is a free agent, making a move for him makes absolute sense for Chelsea. With Christopher Nkunku set to arrive in the summer, the French duo can cause problems for most defences in the Premier League.
