Chelsea provides an update on Cesar Azpilicueta following injury during the Southampton game
After suffering a concussion in Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Southampton was taken to the hospital, but right-back Cesar Azpilicueta has been released from the hospital.
Saints striker Sekou Mara challenged the Spanish defender, who received a kick to the head and collapsed on the ground instantly.
The 33-year-old was immobile for a while and treated with oxygen on the field before being carried off the field while still aware. Azpilicueta skipped training, and the Blues have stated that he is coordinating his return to play with the team’s medical staff.
After addressing the crowd for the first time since the episode on Saturday afternoon, Azpilicueta expressed gratitude to his supporters for their unwavering support.
According to a statement from Chelsea, (source: Independent.UK) it is said:
“Following a concussion injury sustained during Saturday’s game against Southampton, César Azpilicueta has been discharged from hospital and is recovering well at Cobham.”
We are happy to hear that he is healthy and recuperating well, as Azpilicueta is one of the top backup options for the right-back position and the centre-back region. This campaign, the 33-year-old has played at centre-back as well as a right-back – with versatility being one of his strongest suits at this age.
While Potter hasn’t frequently deployed the right back this season, Azpilicueta is still a competent player who can be relied upon despite his advanced age. He has lost a few yards in pace over the years but his reading of the game and experience make him an elite defender.
There are relatively few veteran players in this Blues team, and it is important that we have leaders like him in the dressing room. The 33-year-old only has one year left on his contract, (Transfermarkt), and if Azpilicueta is able to impress with his performance, he may be offered a contract extension like Thiago Silva.

Thankfully, Azpi is on the mend and would be back in the coming weeks. It is time we start thinking of a team beyond the former Olympique de Marseille star, but for now, it is clear that he can offer a lot to us.
