Chelsea ‘explored’ deal to sign African midfielder on January deadline day

Chelsea ‘explored’ deal for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on deadline day last month

On deadline day in the previous transfer window, Chelsea ‘explored’ a deal to sign Sofyan Amrabat from Serie A outfit Fiorentina, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (h/t football.london).

The Blues held direct talks with the Viola to acquire the midfielder’s services. However, the Italian side were not keen on parting ways with the 26-year-old on loan in January.

A number of sides are looking to capture the Morocco international’s services in the future. He has been in fine form in the current campaign for both club and country.

In the end, the Blues got hold of Enzo Fernandez from SL Benfica. The Argentina international signed for the Stamford Bridge side in the final hours of the previous transfer window.

Amrabat has been at Fiorentina since the summer of 2020. Over the years, the midfielder has been a reliable player for the Florence-based club.

However, in the current campaign, the 26-year-old has caught a lot of people’s attention with his displays. This season, he has made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Viola.

The Moroccan was also a key player for his nation in the 2022 World Cup. In Qatar, Walid Regragui’s team made it to the semi-final of the prestigious tournament after handing upsets to the likes of Spain and Portugal.

At Chelsea, the number six position has, over the years, been occupied by N’Golo Kante. Unfortunately, the France international has had injury issues in the last few seasons. Denis Zakaria is also at Graham Potter’s disposal. But the 26-year-old is at the club on loan for now from Juventus.

Enzo is a dynamic midfielder. However, Amrabat is capable of adding protection to the backline sitting in the engine room. However, it remains to be seen whether the Blues will pursue the Moroccan’s signature again in the coming months.
